Malta & Gozo Weather FAQ

A little local knowledge for reading the forecast and planning your day across Malta, Gozo and Comino.

Can the weather differ between Malta, Gozo and Comino?

Yes. Rain, cloud and wind can vary between forecast points, even when temperatures are similar. Compare the hourly forecasts for the places you plan to visit. A model forecast represents an area; it cannot describe every street, bay or shower precisely.

Does rain in the Malta forecast mean it will rain all day?

A rain symbol describes its forecast interval, which may be one, six or twelve hours. It does not necessarily mean continuous rain throughout the day or rain everywhere on the islands. Check the labelled interval, amount and location. A missing rain amount means data is unavailable, rather than a forecast of dry weather.

How can I find a sheltered beach in Malta or Gozo?

Start with the forecast wind direction and look for a shore facing away from it. Our beach page compares shoreline orientation with forecast wind to suggest sheltered shores. This is an exposure estimate: swell, currents and local conditions can still differ. Follow beach flags and local notices.

What do Majjistral, Grigal and Xlokk mean in a Malta weather forecast?

These are Maltese wind names: Majjistral is north-westerly, Grigal north-easterly and Xlokk south-easterly. Wind direction tells you where the wind comes from. On our maps and forecast cards, arrows point in the direction the wind or waves travel.

Where can I check the sea temperature in Malta?

The marine forecast shows the available regional sea-surface temperature and its forecast time. It is an offshore model value, so a shallow bay or a particular swimming spot may be different. Read it alongside wind and waves when planning time by the water.

Can the sea stay rough when the local wind drops?

Yes. Swell can arrive from weather elsewhere and persist after the nearby wind eases. Check the wave forecast as well as the local wind; a sunny or calm-looking forecast on land does not describe all conditions offshore or at an exposed shore.

Which forecast should I use for Comino and the Blue Lagoon?

Use the Comino land forecast for temperature, rain and wind, then check the marine forecast for the crossing and surrounding sea. The regional offshore forecast is not a measurement inside the Blue Lagoon. For service changes, check your boat operator directly.

Where can I find Malta weather by month?

Our monthly archive articles explore temperature, wind and rainfall in the saved forecast series, with dates and coverage explained. Use them for examples of how a month varied between years. For your upcoming dates, use the current forecast; these archive series are not long-term climate averages.

Is the historical weather archive based on weather observations?

The Weather.mt archive contains saved forecasts, rather than measurements from weather stations. Comparisons match the same calendar date and Malta local hour in different years. Issue times, lead times, missing data and any nearby source are disclosed so you can judge the comparison.

Where does Weather.mt get its weather data?

Regional offshore sea forecasts use Open-Meteo marine data. Locality pages identify their forecast source; some nearby places share a point, and a nearby source may be used if a cache is missing. Forecast timestamps and stale-data notices help you see how current the available data is.
