April weather in Malta: a warmer second half, spring rain and a wind check

April 2025 warmed noticeably after its opening days. Our archive shows why a spring visit still benefits from an hourly wind and rain check.

The short version

  • Mosta’s complete April 2025 series averaged 16.3°C, with average daily highs of 18.8°C.
  • The first ten days averaged 14.8°C; the final ten averaged 17.0°C.
  • Five dates had at least 1 mm of forecast rain, while eleven reached at least Beaufort force 6.

April began with one mood and finished with another

April often carries the promise of a Maltese spring day: enough warmth for a long lunch, enough light for a proper walk and the possibility that the jacket might spend some time over your arm. The 2025 archive supports part of that picture, but it also gives the month a noticeably cooler opening and an active wind forecast.

At Mosta, all 30 days are represented. The monthly mean was 16.3°C, with an average daily high of 18.8°C and an average daily low of 14.1°C. These are useful background figures for the month, especially when read alongside the daily progression rather than as a forecast for every afternoon.

There is no April 2024 series in the saved archive. This review follows April 2025 and compares it with the surrounding months and the same-year island points. The most distinctive finding is the change within April itself: the opening third was substantially cooler than the middle and closing parts.

Pleasant highs and cooler hours still shared the calendar

The highest hourly value in the Mosta series was 22.5°C on April 15. The lowest was 11.7°C around the early morning of April 8. That range makes it easy to understand how two visitors could describe April differently without either having exaggerated.

The average daily high of 18.8°C gives a more representative daytime reference than the single warmest hour. The average daily low, 14.1°C, shows that the warmer spring afternoons were still accompanied by cooler parts of the day. Both belong in a plan that starts early or finishes after dinner.

A comfortably warm stretch in a sheltered location is not contradicted by those overnight figures. Temperature, wind exposure and the time spent sitting still all affect the experience. For the archive reader, the key is to keep the measures in their proper places: a daily high, a monthly mean and an early-morning minimum are three different descriptions, not three competing versions of the truth.

The opening ten days were the outlier

Mosta’s first ten days averaged 14.8°C. The middle ten averaged about 17.2°C and the closing ten 17.0°C. The main warming happened between the opening and middle parts, with the final third holding close to that higher level.

This is more informative than saying April was somewhere between winter and summer. The chart shows a month whose first third could have given a cooler impression than a later visit. April 8’s low belongs to that opening period, while the warmest hourly value appeared in the middle of the month.

The final ten-day mean was about 2.2°C higher than the opening ten-day mean. That is a meaningful difference over a short stay, but it was a description of this April rather than a dependable rule for choosing the same week next year. Spring’s timing is something to inspect in the actual forecast, not an appointment the atmosphere has agreed to keep.

A cool morning, a warm afternoon and a breezier follow-up

April 8 supplies the 11.7°C low, April 15 the 22.5°C high and April 16 the strongest hourly wind speed, 14.5 m/s. The last two dates are particularly useful together: the month’s warmest temperature did not signal that every other part of the weather had become quiet.

The largest complete daily rain forecast occurred on April 10, at 10.5 mm. It sits between the early cool spell and the warmer middle section. Looking at that sequence makes a better story than selecting the warmest day as an advertisement for the entire month.

If you remember being in Malta around those dates, the archive can put numbers beside that memory. If you are using the month as context for a future visit, the lesson is about variety within a short period. The weather can improve in one respect while changing in another. April likes to keep more than one item on the agenda.

Five qualifying wet days, rather than a month-long washout

The complete Mosta rain series totalled 30.6 mm. Five dates reached at least 1 mm, and April 10’s 10.5 mm supplied about a third of the monthly amount. That leaves most dates below the threshold while giving one episode a fairly prominent role.

The rain bars show when the interruptions appeared. A smaller count of wet days does not tell you whether a particular excursion would have encountered a shower, but it does help explain why the monthly total should not be interpreted as continuous poor weather.

For a spring itinerary, leave enough flexibility to use the better hours. A long outdoor visit need not be scheduled for the same part of the day simply because the booking calendar offers an empty square there. Check rain timing as the date approaches, and make the indoor alternative something worthwhile. Then a shower becomes a reason to change the order, rather than an argument with your holiday.

The spring warmth came with a noticeable breeze

Average hourly wind speed at Mosta was 6.0 m/s. Eleven dates reached at least Beaufort force 6, and the largest hourly value was 14.5 m/s on April 16, or force 7. The wind story was therefore more active than a mild temperature headline alone might suggest.

Compared with March’s 7.6 m/s average, April was less windy on that overall measure. Yet the number of stronger dates still deserves attention if your plans centre on cliffs, exposed promenades or boat trips. A reduction in the average does not mean every hour has become equally gentle.

Direction is worth checking alongside speed. A place that feels pleasantly sheltered from one direction can be much more open to another. For the sea, use the current wave forecast as well: the air-temperature chart is not a shortcut to conditions around a landing point. April’s atmosphere may be warming, but it has not offered to carry your beach bag home.

A step up from March, followed by a much bigger move into May

The mean at Mosta rose from 15.6°C over the available March days to 16.3°C in April. May’s covered days then averaged 20.2°C. In this year’s sequence, the larger change came after April rather than before it.

The average daily high tells a similar story: 17.6°C in March, 18.8°C in April and 23.0°C in May. April sits clearly in the transition, but its own daily chart shows that the transition had already become visible by the middle of the month.

The island point means in April were relatively close. Sliema averaged 16.4°C, Marsaxlokk 16.7°C, Victoria 16.5°C and Comino 17.0°C. The shared upward seasonal movement is more useful than turning those small differences into a precise promise about the warmest lunch spot. Local exposure and the actual day still have plenty to contribute.

April works well with a layered day

Start by checking the cooler hours you actually expect to use. An early departure and a late return can require a different layer from the warmest afternoon. Make it easy to adjust clothing during the day rather than treating that as evidence that you packed incorrectly.

For walking and sightseeing, a route with both open and sheltered sections gives you choices. Match the longer exposed part to the most suitable wind and rain window. If the forecast changes, swap the order. This is a practical use of an hourly forecast, rather than an attempt to predict an entire holiday from one monthly average.

April 2025 offered a warmer middle and final stretch, a limited set of more noticeable rain days and enough wind to matter. That is an appealing spring story when read with its details intact. It is also a reminder that the ideal April packing list contains a little adaptability. Leave space for a layer, a change of plan and the possibility that your jacket will spend the best part of the afternoon being carried.
